To me, a good remix is all about the beautiful surprises; hearing a song you already know and love, but in a completely new light. Perhaps there’s a different beat or a new additional melody - it’s the same song but in a totally different form. The creation of a good remix is an art form within itself, and I believe that sourcing those gems that stand out from the rest is what can set you apart from other DJs.

I’ve always followed these 2 fundamental rules when it comes to DJing:

1. Familiarity - Songs that people already know and love.
2. Freshness - New songs that are undoubtedly amazing, that the listener is excited to hear.

When DJing, if you strike a good blend of these two then you’ll be sure to win a crowd over. The beauty of remixes is that you can accomplish both of these pointers in one great track. A remix that is worthy of playing should still be recognizable, but with a new flair and spice that helps your set stand out.

Finding good quality remixes can be tough. With so many budding bedroom producers out there, sifting through the sea of tracks to find the ones that are good enough to play can often become quite the task. My rule of thumb is to only ever play remixes that are so good that they are either better than the original, or are equally as good as the original but with a new twist. For example, when a good R’n’B track is paired with a more upbeat beat, making it more Housy and mid-tempo, I’m always naturally inclined to want to keep listening.

When I’m digging around for good remixes I search on websites like Soundcloud, Bandcamp and Youtube. There’s such a variety out there, and this is what I love most about remixes; two remixes of the exact same song could have a totally different vibe, and create a completely different energy. One version could be appropriate for a certain kind of event, and the other a total no-no, despite both being based on the same original song.

Without further ado, I wanted to share with you a curated list of some of my favorite remixes right now. I had a blast putting this mix together. Check out some of my notes on my top tracks below. Enjoy!
